Celtic First Up For Red's In Valley Opener ....
The Blue Square North League fixtures were announced today and the Red's were given an
opening day tie against Stalybridge Celtic to kick the season off on Saturday August 8th
at The Valley, kick off 3pm. The results against the Celts last season saw the teams play out
a thrilling 3 vs 3 draw at Bower Fold in October and the visitors running out 1 vs 0 winners at
The Valley in February so it is sure to be a tight affair.
Other fixtures of note are the Red's first away match which sees them visit newly promoted
Ilkeston Town on Tuesday August 11th, who after finishing as last season's Unibond Northern Premier League Runners Up will be keen to prove they can compete at the higher level in front of their home fans for the first time this season at The New Manor ground.
The Christmas fixtures see a change this year as last season's Southern League Premier Divison play off winners, Gloucester City, are now deemed as the Red's nearest neighbours and Boxing Day sees us welcome the Tigers to the Valley with the reverse fixture just 6 days later at the Corinium Stadium in Cirencester - their temporary home since the floods of 2007 when the water reached 'cross bar' level at Meadow Park and the subsequent astronomical cost of repairs cruelly drew the curtain on their home of many seasons.
The local derby matches against Solihull Moors are now scheduled for Tuesday 27th October at Damson Park and Saturday February 20th at The Valley - with the Red's finishing above their local rivals for the past 2 seasons, with players on both sides having played for both teams and new Assistant Manager/Coach Micky Moore visiting his former team these matches promise to be feisty affairs and not for the faint hearted - player or fan!!
In another traditionally hard fought contest, The Reds host AFC Telford Utd on Saturday November 7th with the reverse fixture at The New Bucks Head on Saturday February 13th.
The final game of the season sees the Red's travel to The Butcher's Arms Ground, home of Droylsden F.C. who narrowly missed out on the play offs, finishing in 7th place in their last campaign and with a tremendous F.A. Cup run along the way it could be a tough finish to the campaign for Gary, Micky and the lads.
