Manager Strengthens Defence Yet Again ....

Red's manager Gary Whild today further bolstered his defensive ranks with the

addition of centre back Tom Birch from Unibond Premier Division outfit Bradford Park

Avenue. The former Hinckley United defender, 25, was due to sign for the Reds and

follows hot on the heels of the capture of fellow defender Jordon Street from Yeovil Town.

The signing caps a better week for Whild who watched his side bag their first points

of the Blue Square North season with a richly deserved 2-0 victory at Northwich Victoria

on Saturday.

The win leaves the Reds in good heart heading into tomorrow’s visit of much-fancied

Alfreton Town and the Bank Holiday Monday trip to Hinckley United.

Defender Liam Francis gave the Reds the lead at Northwich shortly before the interval

with a header from Dave Bridgewater’s free kick and the points were clinched seven

minutes from time when Gary Hay peeled away from his marker to glance home a near

post header from Bridgewater’s corner.

Whild, who revealed he was delighted with the debut of forward James Dance following his capture from Rushall Olympic, said: “Of course it’s a relief to me to get that first win on the board but more so for the players because many of them are new to this level and winning breeds confidence.

“We could have won by a bigger margin and that’s pleasing considering we were playing a side who were in the Blue Square Premier last season.

“The win had been coming because there’s no way we deserved to come away from the Blyth Spartans and Stafford Rangers matches empty-handed.”

Ahead of the Bank Holiday double-header Whild added: “Alfreton will be a tough test as they have spent some decent money there and improved their squad having been in the promotion picture for several seasons now and, likewise, we know we face a challenge at Hinckley.

“We need to concentrate on ourselves though and make sure we put in good performances and the results take care of themselves. There’s little point in setting points targets because we have already seen that you don’t always get the points you deserve from certain games.”

Meanwhile, striker Richard Ball has left the Valley Stadium to return to Evesham United and Mark Hands (groin) remains the only injury victim, although he is closing in on a return.
