Fancied Celtic strolled to a comfortable victory and it could have
been more had it not been for a fine penalty save by Redditch
keeper Danny Lewis.
On a fine sunny afternoon, Celtic dominated the early stages of the
game, with Joe O'Neill and Matty Barlow going close.
A goal began to look inevitable and it came in the 21st minute when Barlow crossed in low for Dave Hankin to easily turn the ball in.
Redditch were having trouble making attacking inroads and the visitors' defence was not really troubled during the opening period.
On 28 minutes the second goal came when Barlow got on the end of a free kick from Andy Smart which was played into the box and scored easily.
Redditch's defence was in all sorts of trouble and on 28 minutes Liam Francis was booked for a foul on Barlow, who would otherwise have been through on goal.
The resulting free kick saw the defenders make a vain attempt to clear and Lucan Spittle turned the ball into his own net.
The Reds came out with more purpose in the second half and David Bridgewater tested visiting goalkeeper Paul Phillips for the first time on 47 minutes.
But it looked all over when Celtic were awarded a clear penalty on 52 minutes when Asa Charlton brought down O'Neil in the box but Lewis parried Smart's spot kick and grabbed the rebound.
Redditch unexpectedly pulled a goal back on 67 minutes when substitute Richard Ball found Gary Hay with a pinpoint pass and he played it to Jack Byrne who beat Phillips from close range.
This was only a temporary respite though and Celtic wrapped up a good opening day win on 79 when the unfortunate Spittle, in attempting to head the ball back to Lewis, could only put it into the path of Barlow who made it 4-1.
New signing for Redditch Joe Clark, who looked lively throughout, had a shot headed off the line late on but it wasn't their day.
