Hard Work Earns Vital Win .....
Saturday 19th September 2009
Redditch United 2 vs 1 Workington
Thank you to our match day sponsors:
Reds manager Gary Whild included new signing Jerry Gill in his starting line-up for the
Valley Stadium clash with Workington. The former Birmingham City defender replaced
Lucan Spittle at right back and there was also a place in the side for midfielder Mark Hands
back in contention following surgery on his knee.
Chances were few and far between early on with Redditch having the only effort inside the opening ten minutes when Jamie Sheldon headed a Dave Bridgwater free-kick wide.
The Reds took the lead on 29 minutes with the first on target effort of the game. Jamie Sheldon did well to beat his man on the left and his cross was headed home by James Dance.
Jamie Oliver looped a header over the crossbar on 36 minutes from another Bridgwater set-piece.
And there was a glorious chance for the home side to extend their lead a minute before the break when Sheldon tricked his way past defender Andy Langford before squaring the ball to Bridgwater who miscued in front of goal. The ball ran to Mark hands on the far side of the area but his shot was palmed away by Workington keeper Tony Caig.
H-T 1-0
The visitors came more into the game after the break and a Gareth Arnison shot deflected off Reds defender Liam Francis and onto the crossbar on 68 minutes.
A minute later and the scores were level. Substitute Dan Shannon slipped a ball through to Jonny Wright who chipped keeper Danny Lewis.
Shannon should have taken the lead eight minutes from time when he sneaked through three challenges only to place his shot wide with just Lewis to beat.
And that miss proved costly as Redditch grabbed the winner a minute later, Bridgwater’s shot from the edge of the area being deflected past keeper Caig by Workington defender Tom Aldred.
