Hay Double Puts Red's Through In F.A.Cup Battle .....

Tuesday 29th September 2009

Stratford Town 0 vs 2 Redditch United - (F.A. Cup 2nd Qualifying Round Replay)

Gary Hay's late brace gave Redditch United their first FA Cup victory since 2003 to overcame

stubborn Stratford resistance after the Reds bossed the second half.

Hay returned to the line up in place of Jamie Sheldon and Myron Semper replaced Mark Hands

as United lined up 4-5-1.

After a quick but scrappy opening it was Stratford who began to create openings, Leon Kelly

left the Reds defence in his wake on 14 minutes but dragged his finish just wide and he

missed a great chance three minutes later, blazing over a close range rebound after

Sam Alsop's long distance effort had brought a fine reaction save from Danny Lewis.

At the other end Barry Woolley denied Tom Birch the opener with an acrobatic goal line clearance

and Liam Francis saw his header tipped round the post by Town 'keeper Chris Jay on 40 minutes.

Kelly missed another chance just before half time, collecting Mark Smith's low ball in his stride only to see Lewis get a vital touch with Birch clearing the loose ball from the feet of Danny Lennon.

The second half started slowly but Redditch were improved and looked far more accomplished in possesion, with Stratford increasingly retreating as the game progressed.

United's movement had Town all over the place on 54 minutes and Hay's deft chip was well saved by Chris Jay, clawing his effort out of his top left corner.

As Stratford visibly tired, the chances steadily came and Hay was guilty of a glaring miss on 76 minutes, thumping his header over the bar at the far post following Jamie Coopers left wing cross.

In a rare attack Stratford wasted their best opportunity of the half on 79 minutes, substitute Jozef Jakab glanced his header wide when well placed from Tom Warmer's free kick to the Reds relief and Hay made them pay moments later.

A quickly taken free kick was played down the right for veteran Jerry Gill to whip a byline cross from the right in and after some penalty area pinball Hay took a deft touch and blasted across Jay to finally break down the home side.

Stratford were a spent force and a quick, incisive break added the killer second for Redditch four minutes later.

Jack Byrne released Cooper down the left who darted away from his marker and crossed for James Dance.

Dance fluffed his shot but Hay was quickest to react and coolly finished to wrap up the tie.

The final whistle bought long overdue FA Cup celebration to the Reds' faithful who look forward to a local derby at Solihull Moors in the next round
