Lewis Stars In Defeat .....
Saturday 3rd October 2009
Stalybridge Celtic 3 vs 0 Redditch United
Ten-man Redditch crashed to defeat against high-fliers Stalybridge Celtic.
And the margin would have been far greater had it not been for the heroics of Danny Lewis
in the United goal.
The Reds keeper produced a number of outstanding saves but was helpless to deny Celtic
their opener after just eight minutes, Connor Jennings slotting the ball home following some
neat passes.
Keith Briggs and Joe O’Neill were then denied by Lewis before the latter struck
his side’s second ten minutes before the break, winger Dave Hankin supplying the cross.
Redditch’s best chance of the first period fell to midfielder Jack Byrne but his curling effort struck the outside of the post.
Lewis produced further good saves to keep his side in contention, this time from Briggs and substitute Paul Ennis.
But any hopes the visitors had of salvaging something from their trip to Bower Fold ended with the dismissal of midfield general Jamie Oliver. He was booked for a bad tackle but, just moments later, decided to push Briggs over right in front of the referee.
With two minutes to go, the excellent Hankin broke free before rounding the Redditch keeper and slot home his side’s third.
