Reds Fail To Build On Wonder Goal .....
Saturday 17th October 2009
Redditch United 1 vs 2 Farsley Celtic
A stunning strike from Dave Bridgwater failed to lift the Reds out of the relegation places as
they squandered an early lead at home to fellow strugglers Farsley.
There were just seven minutes on the clock when Bridgwater struck, the midfielder finding
the roof of the net with a scorching effort from 25-yards.
And he almost went one better midway through the half when he latched onto a poor clearance
only to send a 40-yard effort skimming off the top of the crossbar as Farsley keeper Piotra Skiba
tried to recover from his slip.
But two goals in eight minutes before half-time swung the game in the visitors’ favour.
Roy Stamer netted the 28th minute equaliser, pouncing on United’s inability to clear their lines and rifling a shot past Danny Lewis in the Redditch goal.
David Syers should have added a second soon after but sliced his effort wide of the target with just the keeper to beat.
But it was Syers, a thorn in Redditch’s side all afternoon, who created Farsley’s winner, picking out Lee Ellington with his cross for the striker to head home.
The Reds struggled to threaten the visitors’ goal in the second period and were grateful to their keeper for keeping the tally down.
Syers was twice denied by good Lewis saves and when the United stopper was finally beaten, Syers looked on in disbelief as the crossbar came to Redditch’s rescue.
