Senior Cup Anguish .....

Monday 16th November 2009

Worcester City 4 vs 1 Redditch United

Redditch crashed out of the Worcestershire Senior Cup at the hands of rivals Worcester.

The damage was done in a dismal first half that saw the home side open up a 3-0 lead

as the Reds appeared to be suffering a hangover from their 8-0 trouncing at Fleetwood

just two days earlier.

Manager Gary Whild made five changes from the side beaten in Lancashire with

Tom Turner making his debut in goal.

But he could not have wished for a worse start, picking the ball out the back of his net

after just three minutes after Rob Elvins slotted home from 20 yards.

City should have doubled their lead two minutes later when a Rob Davies free-kick found Alfie Carter but his glancing header flew wide.

The second goal came on 16 minutes as Carter ran on to a Gary Walker pass before placing his shot beyond advancing keeper Turner.

It took the Reds 33 minutes before they tested home keeper Jake Meredith, Myron Semper seeing his shot saved at the foot of the post.

This prompted a period of pressure on the Worcester goal but solid defending from central pair Wayne Daniel and Kevin Spencer kept them at bay.

Just when it looked as though the Reds would finish on the offensive, City struck again in injury time when Carter latched onto a long throw into the area and rifled home from close range.

Whild made two changes early in the second period with youngsters Kuol Alor and Dan Carter being handed their chance.

And it was from a Carter cross that Meredith was forced into his first save of the half.

The City keeper produced another excellent save to deny Liam Francis on 70 minutes when the United defender steered a Dave Bridgwater free-kick goalwards.

And Francis had another effort a minute later, this time putting a shot just wide of the target.

At the other end, rookie Turner made a double save, denying Marco Adaggio and Louis Bridges on 76 minutes before Adaggio put a shot over the bar from four yards after a neat run down the left by Carter.

The closing stages saw Turner make two more key saves, denying Craig Wilding on each occasion before the Reds finally broke through, Myron Semper forcing the ball home for a consolation four minutes from time.

But it was Worcester who had the final word, Adaggio clipping the ball home from a low Jordan Fitzpatrick cross.
