Late Goal Sends Reds Through .....
Saturday 21st November 2009
Leigh Genesis 0 vs 1 Redditch United - F.A. Trophy 3rd Qualifying Round
Redditch got a perhaps fortunate victory at Leigh to go through to the next round of the
FA Trophy.
It was two of the substitutes who combined on 86 minutes, Jamie Sheldon firing home
at the far post after a low ball across the box from Andy Ducros.
It was a tense Trophy tie in poor footballing conditions, the first half featuring little
goalmouth action.
Former Blackburn striker Matt Jansen came closest to opening the scoring in this period, firing wide after he had turned on the edge of the box.
Myron Semper fired over for Redditch and Gary Hay put a header into the side netting.
The second half was more free-flowing, with Leigh twice going close on 52 minutes.
Thomas Birch produced a good block from a Jansen shot, then goalkeeper Danny Lewis did well to save Whitham's shot.
But on 65 minutes, Leigh should have gone ahead when Birch fouled Kris King just inside the box but Chris Thompson put the spot kick wide.
Thompson again was guilty of a miss eight minutes later when he was played in by Jansen but put his shot wide.
Redditch had few chances this half but the one they did have they made count, Sheldon making no mistake to send them through just four minutes from time.
