Reds Slip Out Of Trophy .....

Guiseley AFC 1 vs 0 Redditch United - F.A. Trophy 1st Round

The result shows that Guiseley won this game by the narrowest of margins

but truth be told the victory should have been a lot more emphatic as they

made light of the gap between the Unibond Premier and the Conference

North. And although they had much the majority of the possession the

finishing touch was lacking before defender Danny Ellis grabbed the only

goal of the game midway through the second half. Redditch on the other hand had little to offer on the day and although James Walshaw was a constant thorn in their side, his marker Liam Francis was by far United’s best player.

Ironically, it was Redditch who threatened first with Jack Byrne bringing a smart save from Worsnop but Walshaw was soon causing mayhem at the other end where he twice got round behind the visitors defence to pull balls back across the six yard box with no one around to prod it home. Adam Muller also went close but under pressure his shot went into the side netting. James Cotterill put a header over and Mark Betts header hit the bar and went behind with Danny Lewis beaten.

For their part Redditch’s Andy Ducros caused some worry in the Lions rearguard with his cross and Jack Byrne should have done better than put his half chance into the car park. Lewis twice denied Walshaw on the resumption but when Steve Burton floated a free kick to the far post Ellis rose above a posse of players only to see his header blocked by a defender and as the ball bobbled around the classy defender was first to react and lash it past Lewis to book the Lion’s place in the last 32.
