New Boys Fail To Save Reds .....
Saturday 20th February 2010
Redditch Utd 1 vs 4 Solihull Moors
Danny Pitham and Justin Marsden made their Redditch United debuts against local rivals
Solihull but could not stop their new side from slumping to a disappointing defeat.
The pair, on loan from Zamaretto Premier Division outfit Nuneaton Town, were part of a new-look
Reds side that also included a return to the Valley Stadium for defender Danny Scheppel.
But while Gary Whild’s side had the better of the opening exchanges, it was Solihull who took
their chances with striker Simon Johnson leading the way with a second half double.
Matt Blair went close to handing the Reds a fourth minute lead but was denied by a smart save
from Danny Crane. The Solihull keeper then did well to keep out a long-range strike from midfielder
Jack Byrne.
But the visitors survived and, on the back of successive 3-0 victories over high-fliers Corby Town and Hinckley United, grew in confidence as the half wore on.
Tim Gould headed straight at Reds keeper Danny Lewis midway through the period before Ryan Beswick sent a free-kick over the target.
The Moors opened the scoring on 35 minutes when Alex Price’s free-kick wide on the left flew through a crowd of players and past the wrong-footed Lewis.
Johnson should have opened his tally two minutes later, latching onto a Jake Edwards header eight yards out only to stab his shot wide of the goal.
The visitors doubled their lead two minutes into the second half when Lewis fumbled a right wing cross and Johnson gratefully nudged the ball over the line.
And the result was put beyond doubt when the former Halesowen Town striker grabbed his second, latching onto a Beswick through ball before rifling a shot into the roof of the net from 18 yards.
Reds skipper Asa Charlton headed a consolation on 76 minutes but the Moors had the final say when substitute Ross Dempster scored from the spot on 81 minutes after Theo Streete had been upended by Michael McGrath.
Lewis did well to keep out a Dean Lea strike in the dying moments but Solihull were good value for their win.
