Workington 1 vs 0 Reds
Redditch will go into Tuesday’s crunch relegation clash with Stafford Rangers desperate to put the brakes on their poor run of form that has seen them collect just one win in their last nine outings.
And Gary Whild’s side rarely looked like claiming that second elusive victory of 2010 at Workington, a Dan Carter effort late in the first half their only real chance of the game.
The Cumbrians controlled much of the game but were let down by poor finishing and a found star defender Richard Munday in inspired form on his debut.
There were just three minutes on the clock when Workington carved out their first chance, Phil McLuckie pouncing on a weak back pass from another debutant Gary Moran only for Reds keeper Danny Lewis to block his close-range effort.
A minute later and the home side were ahead. Shaun Vipond powered through the middle before finding teenager Ryan Bowman and the winger, on loan from Carlisle United, volleyed home from 18 yards.
Jonny Wright twice failed to convert headers before the break while Carter had a shot that deflected wide of the target – United’s best effort of the game.
The home side continued to have the better of the chances after the break and this time it was the woodwork that came to Redditch’s rescue.
Wright put an effort against the upright on 53 minutes while Stephen Hindmarch put a late chance a fraction too high.
