Hot Shot Shane Nets Debut Double .....

Saturday 6th March 2010

Reds 2 vs 2 Ilkeston Town

A MAGICAL strike from debutant Shane Benjamin completed a dramatic second half comeback

as Redditch secured a crucial point in the battle to beat the drop.

Just past the hour mark the big number nine grabbed his, and Redditch’s, second with a looping

20-yard effort which caught Ilkeston goalkeeper Dan Lowson flat-footed.

It was no less than the Reds deserved for a stirring second half display which saw them claw their

way back from two goals down.

Gary Whild’s men made the worst possible start, falling behind in the second minute. Liam Green’s

curling free-kick was punched clear by Danny Lewis but defender Gary Moran failed to deal with the

ball back in and Charlie O’Loughlin was on hand to lash home from close range.

The visitors always looked dangerous going forward and came close to adding to their total through a long range effort from Matt Godden which narrowly sailed over the bar and a dangerous whipped free-kick from Rory Coleman which was deflected just wide.

Ilkeston had to wait until five minutes before the break to double their lead, when Gary Ricketts rose high at the back post to connect with Tom Bonner’s cross.

Whatever Whild said to his men at half-time clearly worked as they looked a different side and were back in the game within ten minutes of the re-start.

Matt Blair had the Ilkeston defence beat for pace but was brought crashing down by O’Loughlin as he surged into the box. Benjamin stepped up to convert the spot-kick sending Lowson the wrong way.

Then on 61minutes came Benjamin’s wonder strike to level the match and have the home crowd believing three points which looked unlikely a mere 90 seconds into the game were now there for the taking.

And substitute Danny Scheppel almost did snatch victory five minutes before time with a thumping effort from the edge of the box but Lowson somehow managed to palm it onto the post.

There was a scare for Redditch deep in stoppage time as a surging run from Josh Burge found Green unmarked in acres of space inside the box but he managed to slice horribly wide.
