Redditch United 3 vs 0 Alfreton Town

The Reds put their early season troubles behind them as they cruised to a

second successive victory, dispatching visitors Alfreton with ease.

Helped by some solid defending - particularly from new signing Tom Birch

and some smart finishing, they never looked in danger against a side that

began the season with title aspirations.

Jamie Oliver opened the scoring on 32 minutes, rising unchallenged to

power his header into the roof of the net from a Dave Bridgwater corner.

Alfreton’s best period of the game came just before the break when they forced a series of corners but their only real chance fell to Ian Ross who sent a 20-yard

free-kick over the crossbar.

The second half was just six minutes old when Redditch doubled their lead. Gary Hay was tripped by Aden Flint inside the area and Bridgwater buried the penalty into the bottom right-hand corner.

James Dance was denied by visiting keeper Craig Dootson midway through the half while Alfreton substitute Josh Low dragged a shot wide of the Redditch goal.

The result was put beyond doubt on 73 minutes when Oliver’s pass sent Hay clear and he ran 30 yards before neatly placing his shot beyond the visiting keeper.

There should have been a fourth for Redditch late on but Joe Clarke’s shot was blocked by Dootson’s legs.
