Saturday 26th November 2011 – REDS 0 vs 1 Arlesey Town

The REDS entertained Arlesey Town looking to make it three straight wins in a row, with James Travis and Tom Warmer the absentees from the Weymouth game.  It was Joel Grandison on load from Telford and Ross Oulton who would take their places.  The opening stages of the game were littered with mistakes from both sides with the ball barely staying in play for more than 30 seconds at a time.

It was proving difficult for wither team to string a number of passes together in order to create any goal scoring opportunities, with both sides cancelling each other out it looked as if it would be a game of few goals.

The first opening of the game fell to the visitors, following a winding run from Marsh, cutting inside from the right wing, his curling left footed shot, managed just to go wide of Coleman’s upper right.  This produced a response from the REDS with Deards, Halsall and Jones all trying their luck from long distance, but their efforts were unable to trouble Osborn in the Arlesey goal.  There was a shout from the REDS handball, as the ball appeared to hit Bailey on the arm, bit their appeal was waved away by referee Durie.

The best effort of the first half was created by debutant Grandison, following a run from the right wing he cut inside and from 18 yards out hit his shot against Osborn’s near post, with the Keeper stranded no REDS player on hand to put away the rebound.

Spot kick decides the issue for unlucky REDS

A controversial penalty 16 minutes from time handed Arlesey the spoils in this tense Valley Stadium tussle.

But the result was harsh on the Reds who deserved at least a share of the spoils after dominating for much of the game.

The visitors were having their best period of the match when the excellent Jamie Grimes slid in to dispossess Town winger Chris Marsh inside the area. But what appeared a well-timed challenge to shepherd the ball out for a throw appeared to upset referee Durie who awarded a penalty and Chris Dillon made no mistake from the spot.

Buoyed by the goal, Arlesey could have added a second in the closing stages but substitute Aston Goss fired his close-range effort straight at keeper Dean Coleman.

It was a different tale though for the opening hour of this contest with the Reds in control.

Connor Deards, playing his final game before returning to parent club Walsall at the end of his three month loan, fired over the target on 23 minutes after pouncing on some hesitant defending.

Two minutes before the break, new addition Joel Grandison tricked his way into the area only to hit the upright with his shot. The ball bounced out to Deards but the winger’s effort was well saved by keeper Mark Osborn.

The home side continued to dominate after the break with Joe Halsall seeing his 52nd minute effort scrambled behind for a corner.

And from the flag kick, Jimmy Deabill directed his header goal wards only for Arlesey skipper Derek brown to clear off the line.
