Tuesday 15th November 2011 – REDS 2 vs 0 Barwell

The REDS entertained Jimmy Ginnelly’s high scoring Barwell at the Valley looking to improve on Saturday’s poor second half showing at Chippenham.

The home side welcomed back skipper Tom Warmer in the centre of midfield, with Joey Halsall moving out to left midfield.
In the visitor’s line up there was a return to the Valley for Liam Daly and Scott Rickards.
The opening exchanges were pretty even with the REDS looking a threat with James Travis playing just off Jimmy Deabill and Connor Deards proving an outlet for the Reds down the right hand side.  For Barwell it was the prolific Jamie Towers who was keeping Tesfa Robinson at full stretch with some last ditch defending, whilst Jai Stanley and Scott Hadland combined well together in the centre of midfield.  It was danger man Towers who came the closest to opening the scoring following another strong direct run; he cut in on the angle to fire his shot across Dean Coleman’s goal.
But the REDS were more than a match for the visitors in the first half with Warmer, Oulton and Halsall playing with great energy and aggression nullifying the neat passing and movement of the Barwell midfield players.  It was big Jimmy Deabill who came closest to scoring for the home side, following an excellent overlapping run by Stringfellow his cross found Deabill but his header lacked power and was easily dealt with by Castle in the Barwell goal.
2nd Half.
The REDS came out of the blocks the second half upping the tempo in their play and taking the game to Barwell.
With James Travis becoming more prominent playing as the deep striker, and Jimmy Deabill proving a handful for Daly and Rowly, it was the home side who looked the most likeliest to open the scoring.
Against the run of play it was Hickman who tried to pass his way out of defence, with Stanley intercepting the pass, he fed Towers whose turn and shot hit the top of Coleman’s crossbar.  The turning point in the game came on the hour when Jones replaced Oulton and the Reds returned to a more orthodox 4-4-2, now with Jones and Deards providing width on both sides of the pitch, it was Barwell who were becoming stretched and struggling to cope.
The deadlock was broken on 67 minutes with Travis finding himself out on the left wing his in-swinging cross eventually found Deabill unmarked in the box, whose right footed shot found it’s way into the corner of Castle’s net.  It was the home side who were now totally dominant, and the second came two minutes later.  Deards found himself with time and space on the right wing, driving into the box he was confronted by Daly, he beat Daly on the outside and got to the bye line before firing his cross across goal to be tapped in at the far post by Deabill.
The closing stages saw the REDS defend competently and then looking to break on the counter attack with Deards and Jones.
A much deserved win, now sees the REDS head for the south coast to take on Weymouth on Saturday.

STRIKER Jimmy Deabill struck twice in three second half minutes to hand Redditch the points against their Leicestershire visitors.

And the winning margin would have been more had it not been for Barwell keeper Liam Castle.

There was little to choose between the sides in the first half with Jamie Towers firing across the face of goal for the visitors while Deabill nudged a header to the Barwell keeper just before half-time.

But the game came to life in the second period with Towers volleying against the crossbar on 51 minutes and then sending another soaring over the target soon after.

Redditch boss Graham Hyde brought young Walsall winger Jake Jones into the action on 62 minutes, pushing Joe Halsall into the centre. And the tactic almost paid off within seconds with the substitute rolling the ball to Deabill whose shot was blocked by Castle.

The Barwell keeper then pulled off a brilliant one-handed save to deny James Travis with skipper Tommy Warmer pushing an effort wide from 20 yards.

The breakthrough finally came in the 67th minute when Travis picked out Deabill in the centre and the striker placed his shot just inside the far post.

Two minutes later and he notched his second from close range, rolling the ball into the empty net following a jinking ruin down the right from Connor Deards.

Barwell looked a spent force in the closing stages and Deards should have added a third late on but lifted his shot over the crossbar as Castle dived at his feet.

Reds: Coleman 6, Stringfellow 6, Robinson 6, Warmer 7, Hickman 8, Grimes 8, Deards 8, Oulton 6 (Jones 62, 7), Deabill 7, Travis 6, Halsall 6. Subs (not used): Moses-Garvey, Carter, O’Callaghan, Bedford.
Attendance: 155
