A debut goal from Joe Halsall steered Redditch into the second round of the Red Insure Cup.
The midfielder reacted first to head home an Aaron Stringfellow cross after the defender had made ground down the right flank.
The home side had the best of the chances in the first half, twice going close in a frantic three minutes.
Halesowen keeper Paul Evans pulled off a brilliant full-length save to keep out a Jimmy Deabill header on 25 minutes before Connor Deards had an effort blocked in front of goal soon after.
The visitors looked lively at the start of the second half and Nathan Jackson fired a speculative effort inches wide five minutes after the restart.
But it was the Reds who made the breakthrough on 72 minutes, former Wolves youngster Halsall capping an impressive debut with the goal.
The visitors threw on substitutes Nav Arshad and Andrew Westwood in their search for an equaliser but former Yeltz keeper Dean Coleman had a quiet evening in the home goal.
It was Redditch who could have added to the tally in the final stages, Deabill having s hot deflected into Evans’ arms following good work by United’s second debutant, James Travis.
