This Saturday’s Match against Brackley Town will be a Memorial Match celebrating the life of William Aston (2nd May 1922 – 28th December 2011) who sadly recently passed away. Bill Joined Redditch in 1951, enjoying many excellent seasons with Redditch. In 1953 Bill captained the team to regain the champions of the Birmingham Combination title, and runners up in the Worcester Senior Cup. The success was also repeated in 1955 and in 1957 were runners up in the Birmingham Seniors Cup. Bill was always a dedicated footballer, when he could not get to training he would train on his own at the Avery’s ground his dedication went as far as him playing with a broken ankle, stuffing snow down his boots to numb the pain. Bill always said ” he was not a brilliant player but he sure knew how to stop the ones that were”. Bill played in centre half and could header a ball further than some players could kick it. Before the start of a match he would always have a sherry & egg! On Saturday, before the match the Chairman and players will be joining with Bill’s family to pay tribute to a former and much loved Redditch player.
